A most memorable CD. Not any simple CD of compilation of Gor Gor Leslie Cheung 张国荣 songs. But a CD of his songs that were never released.
Universal Music traveled to the UK to recover once-lost master tapes. Universal Music, on the important occasion of the 20th anniversary of his passing in 2023, is launching multiple commemorative projects to record our forever “number one” idol from different angles. Encountering him in dreams, we still see his old, moving smile, but our ears can make new discoveries. Most of Universal Music’s team members are Leslie’s fans, and their longing for him has only increased over the past 20 years.
Everyone is grateful that Leslie released many classic songs in the past, allowing us to continue hearing his warm voice and feeling that he is still with us. Twenty years have passed, and everyone still can’t forget Leslie’s various beauties.
However, this year, everyone’s ears can make new discoveries because Hong Kong Universal colleagues traveled to the UK to search and successfully found a batch of precious master tapes recorded by Leslie during his New Talent period, bringing lost recordings and unreleased songs back to the world.
To make it a grand affair and stay true to Leslie’s musical style and concepts, Universal once again invited Leslie’s dedicated producer, Liang Rong Jjun, to produce the “REMEMBRANCE Leslie” album. The disc includes three precious recordings, including a never-before-revealed version of “Unintended Sleep,” cover songs “Who is the Most Loved” and “A Song for You,” all of which were completed in the 80s but never officially released or exposed.
Additionally, the disc comes with seven newly arranged classic hits. Despite the raging pandemic, Universal and Liang Rongjun still sincerely invited the Czech Philharmonic Orchestra to participate in the new arrangements of “Side Face” and “Starting from Zero,” allowing people from different regions to “imagine” Leslie together.
The digital album was released on March 24, 2023.
