On May 7, 2024, Universal Music Hong Kong will release the album “Leslie Cheung’s Farewell Concert” 张国荣张国荣告别乐坛演唱会足本版 for the first time, featuring all the songs from Leslie Cheung’s farewell concert held between 1989 and 1990 at the Hong Kong Coliseum. This release marks the first time in 34 years that the concert has been fully recorded, reconstructing complete memories for longtime fans and fully showcasing Leslie’s stage charisma to a new generation of fans.

The concert, which ran for 33 shows, was a sensation in Hong Kong, especially since Leslie announced his retirement from the music industry after these performances. The event is still fondly remembered more than 30 years later and is considered a highlight of the golden era of Hong Kong’s entertainment industry.

Different brands under Universal Music (formerly Polygram) have released products related to the “Leslie Cheung’s Farewell Concert” over the years, each achieving remarkable sales. The “Red Pavilion 40” series, recently launched and highly anticipated, includes this concert as its top-selling album, underscoring the enduring love and passion fans have for Leslie and his performances.

However, Universal Music’s team has long regretted not being able to release a complete version of the concert album, as it represents an important chapter in Leslie’s music career that was never fully presented. This changed when the team in Hong Kong contacted relevant parties in the UK and successfully retrieved the lost master tapes from the former New Art Treasure Record Company. After processing in Hong Kong, the complete version of the concert was finally made available.

With the master tapes recovered, the Chinese division of Universal Music has spared no expense and is committed to treating this release with the highest standards. To honor the occasion, Universal has opted not to use the previous mixes but instead has invested in experts to remix the concert. The new mix maintains Leslie’s original essence and personal flair while enhancing the sound quality and depth, offering a delightful surprise whether listened to via headphones or a stereo system.
