What kind of title is this for an album ! HAM ???
Joanna Wang’s 王若琳 EP “H.A.M.” (released in 2016) is a quirky, experimental project that stands for “Happy Accessible Music”. It marked a significant departure from her early jazz-pop image, diving into a “wacky” and “weird” world of retro electropop.
The EP features three tracks, all written in English and produced in collaboration with prominent Korean and Japanese producers:
- “Hello Anyung” (哈囉安娘): A catchy, synthesizer-heavy track about a teenage idol who falls in love with a man making harassing phone calls.
- “Teenage Girl Patrol” (青少女巡邏隊): A bubblegum pop anthem designed to “soothe the empty hearts of otakus and middle-aged men”.
- “Good Times” (好時光): A jazz-funk fusion with a whimsical, slightly mocking tone that encourages listeners to feel good regardless of life’s tragedies.
Joanna described herself during this era as an “imaginary super youth perverted ham idol artist,” using the project to explore the boundaries of mainstream pop through a satirical and surreal lens.
