In 1986, Hacken Lee (李克勤) released his debut self-titled EP, Hacken Lee, through PolyGram Records.
This release followed his victory in the 1985 “Hong Kong 19 District Amateur Singing Contest,” where he won by performing Alan Tam’s “Love in the Fog”. At the time of this release, he was still a secondary school student at Wah Yan College.
EP Details & Tracklist
The EP was originally released as a 12-inch vinyl (45 RPM) in Hong Kong. It featured four tracks:
- Who is Willing to Part? (誰願分手) – A signature ballad written by Xiang Xuehuai and composed by Niu Da-ke.
- The Ideal Beginning (理想的開始) – A track for which Hacken Lee contributed lyrics.
- Wristwatch (手錶).
- Rainy Scene (雨景).
Career Impact
- Early Reception: While it marked his professional entry into the music industry, the EP saw modest commercial success, selling fewer than 10,000 copies. Every one has to start somewhere….
- Comparisons: During this era, his vocal style was frequently compared to Alan Tam 谭咏麟, a singer who would later become his long-term collaborator in albums such as this one. The Irony of life.
