“Jailbird” (Chinese: 《囚鸟》) is the 13th studio album and the third Mandarin-language album by acclaimed Hong Kong pop diva Cass Phang (彭羚). Released on May 16, 1996, by EMI Music, the album served as her major breakthrough into the Taiwan and broader Mandopop markets.
彭羚 囚鸟 Production & Background
The album’s title track was produced and composed by the renowned Taiwanese musician Phil Chang (张宇), with lyrics written by his wife and longtime collaborator, Shi Yi Lang (十一郎).
The lyrical theme depicts the isolation, vulnerability, and loneliness of modern urban romance, comparing a woman trapped in an unreciprocated relationship to a “caged bird”. According to Mandopop history, Shi Yi Lang wrote the lyrics reflecting her own intense feelings of loneliness at the time, as Phil Chang was frequently away from home juggling tight production schedules for both of their albums.
彭羚 囚鸟 Key Tracks & Adaptations
The album contains 10 tracks totaling approximately 45 minutes. While the title track was a brand-new production, several other major hits on the record were Mandarin adaptations of songs from her previous wildly successful 1995 Cantonese album, Outside the Window (《窗外》):
- “Jailbird” (囚鸟): The breakout title track that won “Best Golden Song” at the Malaysia Chinese Golden Song Awards and secured her the “Best Performing Female Singer” title at the Singapore Hit Awards.
- “Can’t You Return My Memories?” (连回忆都不给我吗): The Mandarin version of her Cantonese hit “Window” (窗外).
- “Thank You For Loving Me With All Your Heart” (感谢你用心爱我): The Mandarin rendition of her iconic award-winning Cantonese track “Completely Because of You” (完全因你), originally featured as the theme song for Chow Yun-fat’s film Peace Hotel.
