Ayumi Hamasaki 浜崎あゆみ, born October 2, 1978, in Fukuoka, Japan, is a trailblazing Japanese singer-songwriter, producer, and fashion icon, often referred to as the “Empress of Pop.” Raised by her mother and grandmother after her father left the family when she was young, she began modeling at age seven to support her family and later moved to Tokyo at fourteen to pursue a career in acting and modeling.

After limited success in those fields, Hamasaki was discovered by Avex Trax CEO Max Matsuura at a club, leading to her musical debut in 1998. Her breakthrough came with the album A Song for ××, which topped charts and sold over a million copies, launching her into superstardom.

Hamasaki is renowned for her prolific output, dynamic image changes, and influence on Japanese fashion and culture.
